Albrecht Durer was an ambitious artist
who produced over a thousand
masterpieces, executed in a
great variety of techniques, such as
copperplate engravings, pencil drawings,
wood cuts and oil paintings. He was the
first artist who elevated the graphic
medium to an independent art form.
The artist's skill can be seen in this
self-portrait done in 1500 at the age
of 29.
