Synopsis: Volume 1 Issue 2


Zamora's thugs return to the Club Congo, one of Zamora's establishements, and Mercedes, who is waiting tables, recognizes the briefcase they're carrying as Mister X's. Mercedes eavesdrops on their conversation with Zamora. The briefcase they recovered contains only junk, and the goons are confident but not certain that X is dead. (They didn't stick around to recover the body.) As it turns out the city's decay is what saved X's life: a heap of garbage at the foot of the building broke his fall. Patrice, upset at Zamora's possessiveness, resolves to teach him a lesson, and Zamora and his associates visit Perkins, the city archivist. Perkins informs them that there is nothing unusual about Zamora's copy of the city's blueprints, and that the only other individuals receiving copies were the city's architects, Myers and Eichmann, who are apparently both dead. After Zamora leaves, Perkins calls Katsuda, an attorney, and we discover there's more on the blueprint tapes than he told Zamora. X is in Katsuda's office when Perkins calls, and Katsuda calls him "Eichmann". X muses on his past. Patrice, meanwhile, has hired a Mister X lookalike for a simulated tryst for Zamora's benefit. Predictably, Zamora takes the prank badly, accidentally killing one of his own henchmen while trying to gun down "Mister X". We find out how Mister X moves through the city--Eichmann had secret passages and tunnels placed everywhere. X finds out from Patrice what the shooting was about, and sets off after Zamora. While the impostor is running from Zamora, he bumps into Mercedes, who, like Zamora, mistakes him for the real deal. The real X arrives, followed immediately by Zamora, who is delighted at the opportunity to kill Mister X twice. He's about to follow through when Mercedes knocks him out with the remains of Mister X's briefcase. With Zamora safely in police custody, X resolves to stay in Radiant City and try to repair the damage.
