In early 1984, a small group of Albany Police Officers came together with an idea and a dream. The intent of this group,
which would number only five after the first few months of practice, was to establish a traditional Celtic pipe band. It was hoped that such a band would serve to
bring pride to the Police Department as well as the citizens of Albany, New York. Some of these men had prior musical experience, some had none and no one
knew how to play the bagpipes. A dedicated instructor was found and through hard work and perseverance the nucleus of the band was formed.
By September, 1985, we were confident enough, with the addition of several more members, to incorporate ourselves as the Capital District Police Pipe Band. The die was cast. We had to go forward now with no looking back. In March, 1986, Albany's St. Patricks Day Parade was the setting for our first parade as a band. Still awaiting the arrival of our kilts, we marched wearing police trousers and Balmoral caps. Fortunately, our kilts arrived the following month and the rest, as they say, is history.
To attempt to recap the past 20 years of band accomplishments would be impossible. So much has happened in what is really a short period of time that, at times, it all seems rather hard to believe. Our members continue to show their pride and selfless dedication to the band in countless parades, memorial services, civic events and charity functions.
Unfortunately, the band also has appeared at far too many funerals for police officers and fire fighters who have passed away
before their time. While these are always sad and somber occasions, we hope that the presence of the band impresses upon those attending that their loved ones
were special and deserving of honor and remembrance.
We are proud of our accomplishments. The Albany Police Pipes and Drums are known throughout the Northeastern United States and has had the good fortune to complete four successful tours of Ireland, and one cruise to Bermuda!
Today, the small group of officers with an idea and a dream has grown. We are a diverse group, representing at one time or another the Albany Police, Albany Fire Department, New York State Police, New York City Police Department, Schenectady Police Department, State University Public Safety, New York State Department of Corrections, Conrail Police, Ellenville Police, United States Army-Military Polic, and Colonie Police. Our civilian members wear badges bearing the names of police officers who fell in the line of duty from throughout New York State.
We are grateful to all who have helped us grow with their support and friendship. We firmly believe that the best is yet to come.
